Maya Nanitchkova Öztürk is a professional combining extensive practice as architect and urban designer with more than fifteen years of lecturing, studio instruction and academic work in both Bulgaria and Turkey. She obtained her Bachelor of Architecture at the Higher Institute for Architecture and Construction, Sofia, Bulgaria, and her Master and Ph.D. in Architecture at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. Since 1990 she has been a full time lecturer and design studio instructor at the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. Along with several professional organisations (AEEA, CAA) she is a member of the IFTR working group ‘Performance and Consciousness’. Her academic interest areas are theory of space, focusing on space-body-mind relationships, as well as methodologies in design education. Her ongoing research is on the theatrical site as socio-spatial construct, where consciousness is addressed in terms of experience and practices.
