A Flock in Flight

by

Robert Elzy Cogswell

A flock of pigeons like a guided missile

sails through the keyhole of the morning.

The unity of a body derives

from each of its parts having congress

with the same mind.

Where rides the mind of birds

when at the same instant they all turn

sharply downward to Waterloo Park?

Something in us – in fish, in herds, in birds –

keeps a common heartbeat

and laughs at our putative logic.
