 A Hurricane of Words

by

Robert Elzy Cogswell

A hurricane of words

comes whirling from the sea of idea.

It seizes my life with unrelenting power,

rips from my hands all other things I love,

forms me faithful to that fine wind.

Matter and energy hurtle down around my ears

and secure me beneath the broken pieces

of rooms and buildings.

Patches of perfume scatter,

laughter leaves without an echo.

My own new deluge splashes from my mind,

floats me in the sweet liqueur of satisfaction.

In odd munificence words

which brook no barriers

wash me into still clear waters

beside bright clean meadows.
